Chinese (phone) Whispers?

Phoned Dad in Northern Ireland at 1PM today as usual. The conversation went something like this:

Dad: "Hello?"

Me: "Hi Dad, it's me. How are you?"

Dad: "It'll have to wait for another time, Lizzy."

Me: "Oh dear, what's the matter?"

Dad: (pained) "I just took my main course out of the oven." (It's 9PM his time.) "Can you call back tomorrow?"

Me: "I'll be at the dentist at 1PM tomorrow... would Tuesday do?"

Dad: "Ach, I was late... try to get Cooper (his dog) a bit for his collar. D'you know what I mean?"

Me: "A bit? What's that?"

Dad: "What?"

Me: "You're getting what for his collar?"

Dad: "Never mind. Talk to you soon."

Me: "Okay...."

Dad: "Bye." (click)

What just happened? :-)
